Giant Sea Spiders

A giant sea spider is nearly a foot across and is an impressive sight indeed. Giant sea spiders and other species are among thousands of creatures. A quarter of them previously unknown. These are found in the icy depths of the Southern Ocean. They feed upon corals and other sessile organisms, sucking up their contents through their enormous proboscis.

Scientifically, Giant sea spiders are in the same major group of animals as terrestrial spiders and scorpions, but they live in the sea. They are eight-legged like spiders on land. In Europe, the biggest ones are about 5 or 6 millimetres across. In Antarctica giant sea spiders have spread and formed many different sizes, including having 10 or 12 legs!

Scientists investigating the icy waters of Antarctica. They have collected mysterious creatures including giant sea spiders and huge worms in the murky depths of Antarctica.

“Gigantism is very common in Antarctic waters,” Martin Riddle, the Australian Antarctic Division scientist who led the expedition, said in a statement. “We have collected huge worms, giant crustaceans and sea spiders the size of dinner plates.”
